On October 4, 2024, we were overcome with great anxiety and sadness because of a heavy flood in the Elephant Nature Park in Thailand.
Our beautiful lovely Faa Sa, in the prime of her life, had been swept away by the water which destroyed the Elephant Nature Park within an hour.
At first the very social Faa Sai was safe, but went back into the water when she heard her herd calling. She was surprised by the force of the water and the mud slide. Faa Sai was probably hit by a heavy object and lost consciousness.
She was dragged along for miles. In the morning of October 5 we received the first messages that a deceased elephant had been found.
Reading the chip confirmed it was our Faa Sai.
Our beautiful brave girl is no more.
In 2007 Faa Sai was rescued as a 5-year-old baby elephant by Lek Chalert (founder of the Elephant Nature Park) and Antoinette van de Water (founder of Bring the Elpehant Home) from a horrible situation at the Surin Elephant Round-Up Festival.
All four legs were tied up and she had very infected eyes.
Faa Sai was being trained to become a circus elephant.
Due to her mischievous and rebellious character the training she received was extra heavy and aggressive, and had come to a point where Faa Sai might not even survive.
Fortunately, she was bought free with the support from Dutch contributors and the foundation Bring the Elephant Home.
Then her life at the Elephant Nature Park could begin.
The first few months were hard for Faa Sai. She had lost all confidence in humans, and rightfully harboured a lot of anger.
She was hurt a lot, and this trauma stayed with her forever.
Throughout the months and years she learned she was safe, and was able to make friends with other elephants and her caretakers.
She was taken in by the family of matriarch Sri Nuan. Sri Nuan taught her how to be an elephant and have respect for older elephants.
Faa Sai also had a caring role to look after the babies, which came naturally to her.
Faa Sai also had the unique ability to reassure other elephants and make them feel at home at the Elephant Nature Park.
Faa Sai grew up to be an amazing, mischievous and social elephant.
A favourite of the many volunteers who all took her to their hearts.
Faa Sai was allowed to live eventeen wonderfully happy years at the Elephant Nature Park.
Bring the Elephant Home, and later the foundation Olifant Adopteren have financially supported here with the help of of adoptive parents.
She thoroughly enjoyed the freedom she had, made plenty of mischief, and was an involved elephant in her herd and family until the very end.
Faa Sai always put a big smile on everyone’s face.
If you liked it or not: Faa Sai got into your heart with her amazing character.
In memory of Faa Sai, her name means Clear Sky after the storm, we have started a fund.
We will never forget her, and we wish every elephant to have the same kind of life Faa Sai had at the Elephant Nature Park.
The Faa Sai Fund will support the Elephant Nature Park financially to make life of traumatized elephants as pleasant as possible.
We also want to support the Elephant Nature Park in the planting of trees.
Faa Sai died on October 5, one day before the birthday of Lek Chailert.
Every year on Lek’s birthday on October 6, trees are planted at the Elephant Nature Park.
This way Lek is creating a safe environment for the animals who have spent a lifetime suffering the cruelty of humans.
Through the Faa Sai Fund we will be able to give Lek a wonderful birthday present every year: the fund will donate trees every year on October 6.
This way Faa Sai will forever live on at the Elephant Nature Park, and support Lek in her amazing work.
